Set up a Nativity Scene

One way to embrace the Advent season is to set up a Nativity scene in your home slowly adding the figures to the scene as the weeks progress. Each day you can reflect on each figure and their part in the birth of Jesus.

Listen to Music

The season of Advent is a wonderful time to listen to music. Both Spotify and Apple Music feature Advent Music Lists.

Read the Gospel of Luke

The Gospel of Luke tells the birth of Jesus. Reading one of the 24 chapters each day is a meaningful way to prepare of the birth of Jesus and serves as a reminder of the reason for the season.

Create and Use an Advent Wreath

An Advent wreath is a Christian tradition that marks the four weeks of the season of Advent. It is typically a wreath of greens, symbolizing new life and is circular in shape reminding us of God’s eternal love. There are four candles, three purple and one pink are lit each night, adding one each Sunday in Advent. The four candles represent the four weeks leading up to Christmas and correspond to virtues of the season:

  • Hope: The first purple candle, also called the "Prophet's Candle," represents the hope for the coming of the Messiah.

  • Faith: The second purple candle, the "Bethlehem Candle," symbolizes the faith of Mary and Joseph on their journey to Bethlehem.

  • Joy: The third candle is pink or rose, representing the joy of the shepherds when the angels announced Jesus' birth.

  • Peace: The fourth purple candle is the "Angel's Candle," representing the peace brought by the angels' message of "Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men!".

  • Optional fifth candle: Some wreaths have a fifth, white "Christ candle" in the center, which is lit on Christmas Day to represent the purity of Christ's birth.  The three purple candles
